How to Mitigate Health and Safety Risks from Flickering LED Lighting

LED light fixtures are the most commonly sold type of light fixture today. Many of these light fixtures flicker, whether visibly or invisibly, and as a result may cause adverse health effects, including epileptic seizures, aggravation of autistic behaviors, migraines, headaches, eye strain, and more. The IEEE 1789 standard includes recommendations on how to mitigate potential health and safety risks from LED lighting._x000D__x000D_This presentation will discuss (1) what flicker is, (2) why flicker is a problem, (3) how flicker can be measured with tools of varying technology levels, (4) how adverse health effects from flicker can be eliminated, and (5) what today’s best practices are regarding flicker. Key Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. explain how LED lighting may flicker without it being directly visible to the human eye2. analyze whether LED lighting in a given space exhibits harmful flicker using tools of varying technology levels3. develop an action plan to identify and eliminate health and safety risks from flickering LED lighting
